Coat Care and Maintenance
With fall coming up, you’ll notice that there’s a change in your dog’s coat as they are building up their winter coat for the cooler months ahead. So we are here to break down a couple of ways you can help maintain your dog’s coat and ways you can improve its appearance.
You may notice an increase in your dog’s shedding any time there’s a seasonal change (spring and fall). You can help keep their shedding to a minimum by brushing them daily. This also distributes the oils in their hair which makes the coat shinier and smoother.
- Long-haired dogs/dogs with undercoats will need a slicker brush to reach down and go through all the hair. When their shedding really picks up; a coat rake will help get rid of loose/dull hair
- Short-haired dogs will need a natural bristle brush to get their hair out. When shedding picks up, you can use a mitt or glove to brush through their coat and get all the excess hair off.
It’s a common misconception that dogs do not need to be bathed during the cooler months- this is false, of course. Keeping your dog on a normal bath routine is recommended no matter what time of the year it is. Things you can add to your routine that can help your dog’s coat in the winter are washing them with a moisturizing shampoo or making sure they’re completely dry before going outside so they don’t get cold.
Keeping up with your dog’s paws is very important no matter what time of year it is. Walking around with cracked paws is painful for them. Using a paw balm can help fight against and repair dried, cracked paws.
Omega 3 and 6
Nutrition is key to keeping your dog’s coat healthy. Making sure your dog has enough Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids is important with coat care as they encourage cell growth and help keep the coat shiny and smooth. These fatty acids also help with inflammation and heart health. That’s why Joy Dog Food is rich in Omega 3 and 6 Fatty Acids so your dog can look its best as well as perform at its best.
